In a letter from a southern 'gaol' (a correctional institution) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated during the epoch of Jim Crow's segregation (Apartheid), a man's name was "boy" or "colored boy" as he was stripped of his dignity, manhood, and humanity, making him amenable to psychiatric treatment from those who run the mental health system. If the "boy" takes his psychotropic medication, keeps quiet and behaves himself; he is shown some respect.
Mental illness in the black community and the community at large is very much misunderstood and few people understand what these people endure.
